What Are Audio Transformers & How Do They Work

When you are in need of impedance matching and step or step down operations in audio applications, audio transformers are needed. Essentially, an audio transformer transmits and modifies input electromagnetic signals into output signals through inductive coupling. To better understand how audio transformers work and why they are important, this blog will provide a brief overview of these electromagnetic devices.

How Do Audio Transformers Work?

Audio transformers consist of copper wire windings around a steel or nickel-iron core. Generally, steel is utilized for its lower frequency transfer ability as a result of its high degree of hysteresis, whereas nickel is used for higher frequency bands due to its high permeability.  As the signal makes its way through the transformer, the amount of windings around the core determines if the impedance level increases, decreases, or remains the same. More than that, the number of turns on each winding dictates whether the transformer provides a loss or gain of signal.

If an input winding has more turns, the signal will decrease. In contrast, more turns on the output winding correlates to an increase in signal. The difference between these signals is called the impedance ratio, and it usually varies for different types of audio equipment such as amplifiers, loudspeakers, microphones, and recording equipment. Since audio transformers do not have a physical connection between their primary and secondary coils, they provide a bi-directional feature between the two windings which can be used interchangeably. For this reason, audio transformers can provide signal loss in one direction and signal gain in the other.

What Is the Purpose of An Audio Transformer?

A majority of the time, an audio transformer is utilized for impedance matching which is often determined by the efficiency of converting voltage to magnetic flux. To achieve efficient power transfer without distortion or signal overload, the input and output impedance levels must be matched. This also allows the signal to be balanced for optimal energy transfer.

Audio transformers generally work at frequencies between 20 Hz and 20 kHz in audio amplifier circuits which are integral to valve or tube designs for matching the high impedance outputs of amplifiers for low impedance speakers. This permits maximum power transfer from the amplifier to the speaker. Moreover, they enable audio signals to reach the loudspeaker while preventing any direct current (DC) from the amplifier to affect the operation of the loudspeaker; thus, they provide added security and safety.
